The ANCC Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) board certification examination is a competency-based examination that provides a valid and reliable assessment of the entry-level clinical knowledge and skills of the FNP. This certification aligns with the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification and Education. Once you complete eligibility requirements to take the certification examination and successfully pass the exam, you are awarded the credential: FNP-BC (Family Nurse Practitioner-Board Certified). This credential is valid for 5 years. You can continue to use this credential by maintaining your license to practice and meeting the renewal requirements in place at the time of your certification renewal. The Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification accredits this ANCC certification.

Exam items are based on the Role Delineation Studies which have been conducted for WOC, Foot Care, Wound Treatment Associate, and AP nursing practices. Those studies create exam content outlines for each specialty. Learn more and download the outlines here.

AANPCB certifications are recognized by all U.S. state nursing boards, nurse regulators in Canada and Puerto Rico, as well as by Medicare, Medicaid, the Veterans Administration, and private insurance companies.

A: There are no plans to retire any certification exam. AANPCB retired the Adult (ANP) exam in 2016. The Gerontological (GNP) exam was retired in 2012. Certification as an ANP or GNP with AANPCB will not be affected if current continuing education and clinical practice hour requirements for renewal of certification are met and the certification is not allowed to expire. ANPs and GNPs should check with the state board of nursing in which they are licensed to practice for licensure information.

A: Scope and Standards of Practice for NPs are legally defined by each state board of nursing. Professional organizations develop Scope and Standards of NP Practice for their discipline and specialty. Most referenced national Scope and Standards of Practice for Nurse Practitioners provided by professional organizations are:

A: Check on the website of the State Board of Nursing (SBON) in which you are licensed. You may also check on Nursys.com which is a free service where participating boards of nursing provide nurse licensure status information. A copy of the nursing license submitted must include your name, license number, and expiration date.

Because the role of the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) focuses on direct patient care, APRN practice requires regulatory recognition beyond Registered Nurse licensure granted by a SBON. Boards of nursing, therefore, use APRN certification as one of several requirements for entry into APRN practice licensure. Each SBON determines which APRN certification examination meet their specific criteria required for licensure to practice as an APRN in the state. NP certification by AANPCB is recognized by all state boards of nursing.

Most state boards of nursing and insurance carriers require national certification for APRN practice and third-party reimbursement. If current national certification as a nurse practitioner is required, then yes, you must renew your certification.

A: Program accreditation requirements for the AANPCB certification exam are completion of a graduate, postgraduate, or doctoral Family or Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner educational program from a U.S. school accredited by an independent national nursing organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education:

A: In collaboration with the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners (AAENP), AANPCB worked to develop a specialty certification examination for eligible Family Nurse Practitioners to recognize their expertise in emergency care. The Emergency Nurse Practitioner certification program aligns with the APRN Consensus Model for specialty nursing practice and meets national accreditation standards. The first ENP examination was offered beginning January 2017.

A: You will be notified by email if additional information is required for the completion of your application. This is an automatic process that occurs weekly after you submit your application. You will also be able to view your application status, as well as any missing information messages through your online account. Each application is reviewed to determine that requirements for eligibility have been met. All applications are reviewed by professional nurse reviewers who assess the candidate's NP program information, didactic coursework, clinical experiences, clinical sites, preceptors, and professional nursing licensure for completeness, appropriateness, and currency prior to approving a candidate to sit for the certification examination.

A: Candidates have 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete the examination. An introductory tutorial to the computer and keyboard is provided before the exam starts. Time spent on the tutorial does not count as part of your test time. Sample questions are included following the tutorial so that you may practice using the keyboard to answer questions, mark items to review, and review answers.

A. Certifications are not active past the expiration date. For requests received from a state board of nursing or third-party vendor for verification of a certification that has expired, AANPCB will provide documentation of the dates in which the certification was valid and thus will reflect an inactive status.

A: Certification as an ANP or GNP with AANPCB will not be affected as long the certification is not allowed to expire and the current minimum continuing education and clinical practice hour requirements for recertification are met. A: An individual may not represent themselves as being certified as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner by AANPCB if their Family Nurse Practitioner certification has expired. Your ENP certification will become inactive if your FNP certification is not renewed. For requests received from a state board of nursing or third-party vendor for verification of ENP certification, AANPCB will provide documentation of the dates in which the certification was valid and thus reflect an inactive status.

Every state and territory in the US set laws to govern the practice of nursing. These laws are defined in the Nursing Practice Act (NPA). The NPA is then interpreted into regulations by each state and territorial nursing board with the authority to regulate the practice of nursing care and the power to enforce the laws. Fifty states, District of Columbia and 4 United States (US) territories, have state boards of nursing (BON) that are responsible for regulating their individual NPA.[1] The boards enforce these laws as defined by their respective state or territorial legislative bodies. The legislative body gives the board of nursing the power to discipline nurses who violate the nursing laws and regulations.[2] Only the BON has the power to discipline a nurse who may pose a danger to the public. 2ff7e9595c
